With almost 90 per cent of young people believing that social media is driving harmful behaviour, a new series of virtual reality (VR) films has been developed to help explore the online dangers they face.

Four new films have been created by Cornerstone VR, part of the Antser Group, to raise awareness of young people’s activity online and the impact this can have on their personal safety and mental health.

In a survey conducted at the end of last year by YoungMinds, it was reported that 34 per cent of young people wanted to leave social media weekly but felt unable to do so, while more than a fifth (22 per cent) are shown distressing content, based on their browsing history, at least once a week.

The Royal Society for Public Health found that using Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram led to increased feelings of depression, anxiety, poor body image and loneliness among 14-24-year-olds.

Serena Hadi, head of operations and practice at Cornerstone, said: “It’s no secret that social media is now an inescapable presence in the everyday lives of so many of us, especially among young people.

“It yields huge power and there are many people using their influence online to target vulnerable children and young people. When we started doing our research, we were really surprised by the methods that these individuals were using.”

Cornerstone VR’s latest films were written and scripted after several focus groups with professionals working with children in social care and the education sector, including the teams at Inspirations – providers of children’s residential care homes – and the London Borough of Redbridge, as well as conversations with young people and consultations with social media experts.

The first is an introduction to social media, showing how it fits into the day in the life of a young person, such as WhatsApp conversations with family members to receiving unsolicited messages from strangers; films two and three show how young people can be persuaded to meet someone in real life; and the fourth focuses on the decline of a young person’s mental health due to social media.

Serena said: “Our new VR content is so important right now because it highlights the impact social media can have on both the physical and mental wellbeing and safety of children and young people. It was really important to us not to retread on old ground. We wanted to make the films as realistic and informative as possible to highlight the things that we don’t always see as adults.”

Parminder Basra, director of operations at Inspirations, said: “When asked if we had young people who would like to support Cornerstone’s new videos we were keen to do so as we understand the risk online social media has on young impressionable minds. Before the internet, the risk for children from strangers was mainly outside the home but this is no longer the case. We need to do all we can to educate and raise awareness to help young minds navigate their first experience of social media and throughout their childhood to equip them with skills to manage the risks.”

As one of the UK’s leading providers of technological solutions, Cornerstone VR is already used by public and private organisations nationwide to raise awareness of early life trauma, domestic abuse, child criminal exploitation (CCE) and child sexual exploitation (CSE).

For more information about Cornerstone VR, click here.

One of the UK’s leading providers of transformational solutions in health, education and social care has partnered with Norfolk County Council to provide cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) training in order to provide stability to foster and adoption placements.

Cornerstone VR, part of the Antser Group, is being used with foster carers in Norfolk to give them a deeper understanding of the children and young people they look after by highlighting the long-term impact of adverse childhood trauma.

Every year, more than 55,000 children in England are placed into the care of a foster family, accounting for 70 per cent of children in the care system – a statistic that is not dissimilar in Norfolk.

There are currently 805 children in fostering placements in Norfolk, including agency placements, out of a total of 1,220 looked-after children in the county.

As a result, Cornerstone VR is being implemented into all foster carer and adoption journeys, in order to help reduce:

The number of adoption breakdowns

The number of foster care placement breakdowns

The duration of support the adopters and kinship carers require

By using VR, viewers are immersed into real-life scenarios, enabling them to experience abuse and neglect first-hand through the eyes of a child. The films cover a wide range of topics from child sexual exploitation (CSE) and child criminal exploitation (CCE) to domestic abuse and county lines.

Serena Hadi, Cornerstone’s head of operations and practice, said: “At Cornerstone, we are committed to supporting better and more positive outcomes for children and young people, especially our most vulnerable. We’re incredibly pleased to be partnering with Norfolk County; I hope that the success of this programme can prove as a fantastic example of just how VR can be used to improve the lives of children and young people across the country.”

The training takes place in carers’ support groups as well as individual sessions to give foster parents insight into their child(ren)’s behaviour, triggers and the way they build relationships.

Social workers across Norfolk are also using Cornerstone VR’s headsets and accompanying video training to give them a fresh perspective on the young people they support.

Penny Carpenter, cabinet member for children’s services at Norfolk County Council, said: “The virtual reality training is just one of the ways we’re helping to support relationships between carers and their children and young people.

“We know fostering is both a rewarding and challenging experience and we want to make sure we are doing everything we can to support our carers, so they can provide the best care for our children.”

VR training is a powerful tool for helping foster carers and social workers to understand the lived experiences of children and young people who have experienced trauma, abuse, and neglect. By immersing them in real-life scenarios, VR can help them develop empathy and understanding, which can lead to better outcomes for the children and young people in their care.

For more information about Cornerstone VR, click here.

In a recent episode of the ‘Dear Social Worker, Let’s Talk’ podcast, Antser’s VR Service Manager, Shalene Lemmie, was featured, shedding light on how virtual reality (VR) is transforming the field of social work.

Hosted by Le’Siran Edwards, a passionate advocate for the social work community, this episode, titled “Creating Trauma-Informed Social Workers Using Virtual Reality,” explores how Cornerstone VR, part of The Antser Group, helps to facilitate trauma-informed approaches to social care, allowing a new perspective for social workers, from those new to the profession through to those who have been in the field for years.

Le’Siran first experienced Cornerstone VR at a recent social work event. The impact she found using the VR had was so remarkable that she was keen to invite Shalene to delve deeper into this groundbreaking technology on her inspiring podcast series.

With over a decade of children’s social work experience, Le’Siran shared:

“The main reason why I’m so excited [to have you on the podcast] is because I’ve tried this, so I know exactly what the VR is about. I’ve experienced it and I still talk about it to this day.
Congratulations to Rachael Carrott, a training and development manager at Adopt South, who has been shortlisted in this year’s Social Worker of the Year awards for her work using Antser VR.

Adopt South is a regional adoption agency, combining the services of Hampshire County Council, Isle of Wight Council, Portsmouth City Council and Southampton City Council.

As a training and development manager – a new post for Adopt South – Rachael has been innovative in incorporating VR into Stage 2 training to ensure prospective adopters not only have a secure insight into the impact of early trauma throughout a child’s journey, but are also able to empathise with the birth families and their experiences.

Between 2021 and 2022, Adopt South extended its use of Antser VR into assessment work, in-person training sessions and adoption support bespoke work; using VR to enhance the parents’ understanding of their child’s behaviours, emotions and triggers and how to respond therapeutically.

Most recently, between 2022 and 2023, it has further been used to support families and schools around specific children.

Rachael, who has been shortlisted in the Digital Transformation in Social Work category, said:

“I’m personally very humbled to be shortlisted for this award. It is great for Adopt South to be recognised as a service on a national level for our use of digital technology, especially our virtual reality offer. Ultimately, we want to best prepare and then support our families and VR is an incredibly useful and valuable resource within our social worker toolkit!”

Rachael regularly shares her learning with all staff in Adopt South and trains other staff to deliver training, building their confidence and knowledge. In addition, she has been working closely with a neighbouring regional adoption agency on their training programme, sharing her understanding and experience.

Rachael has also written a training programme to take VR to schools within the four local authorities – which Adopt South delivers – so that teachers can be better informed of the trauma of adopted children and children’s outcomes can continue to be improved.

Rachel Reynolds, Head of Adopt South, said: “Rachael receives consistent, positive feedback from her role as a trainer and her passion for supporting adopters is evident from the moment you speak with her. She wants to ensure children who are adopted have the best possible experience moving forward.”

Serena Hadi, Head of Operations and Practice at Antser, said: “It’s wonderful to hear that Rachael has been shortlisted in the Social Worker of the Year awards in the Digital Transformation category and we’re delighted that Antser VR has been able to play a part in this fantastic achievement.

“Rachael is an incredible advocate for just how beneficial Antser VR can be in providing the best outcomes for children, young people and those who work with and care for them. We wish her all the very best at the awards!”

For more information on Antser VR, visit: http://18.168.228.101/antser-virtual-reality/

One of the UK’s leading innovators in health, education and social care is launching a new virtual reality (VR) film highlighting the impacts of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) as part of September’s FASD Awareness Month.

Antser has partnered with the National Organisation for FASD and Cambridgeshire Virtual School to create the immersive film, shown from the perspective of an unborn child whose mother is feeling pressured to drink alcohol at a party.

Antser’s flagship VR programme is already used by public and private organisations, nationwide, to raise awareness of topics including domestic abuse, knife crime, child criminal/sexual exploitation and their effects on children and young people.

The latest film, set to launch in time for International FASD Awareness Day (Saturday, 9th September) is voiced by a young person living with FASD and is aimed at those living with and supporting young people with FASD, including birth families, foster carers, adopters, special guardians, residential workers, as well as those working in social care and education.

FASD is a neurodevelopmental condition with lifelong cognitive, emotional and behavioural challenges with over 400 co-occurring conditions, including ADHD and autism.

Serena Hadi, Antser’s head of operations and practice, said: “It was really important for us to put together a film that was not just informative but immersive, so we could really capture the attention of the audience. Being from the point of view of the unborn baby reminds us that this could be anyone’s story.”

In the film, voices can be heard outside of the womb offering the mother ‘just one more’ drink, to highlight how even small levels of alcohol has the potential to affect the growth and development of developing embryos.

Due to difficulties with diagnosis the exact number of people living with FASD is unknown, but it’s thought that one in 13 children are born with it, with up to half a million young people in England and Wales not yet receiving support.

Georgia Roberts, the voice of the new VR film, has FASD, autism and ADHD. As someone with experience of the disorder she is keen to raise its profile, working closely alongside the National Organisation for FASD.

She said: “I think it’s so important to spread the message. I had such a lack of help in my childhood that I want to change that for the next generation. FASD is not spoken about enough and people don’t feel like they understand it. Everyone presents differently so you just need to listen; we know how to help ourselves, we just need to be taken seriously.

“People with FASD aren’t incapable – we are so capable. It’s normally because people hold us back that we fail. We need to be empowered and know our strengths. I hope this partnership broadcasts a strong message to professionals and it helps them understand a lot more about the condition. Every professional should know what FASD is. It shouldn’t take someone being in crisis for them to learn more about it.”

Brian Roberts, director of education and wellbeing at the National Organisation for FASD, said: “FASD is a serious public health concern around the world. People with FASD are often misunderstood and poorly supported, but it really doesn’t have to be like that. Examples from people with FASD, who have been supported by informed family and professionals, show that they can and do achieve.

“This video has been developed in collaboration with people with lived experience, as professionals, as parents and with people with FASD. This experience shapes the training package to give those taking part grounded real life examples of how people with FASD can be understood and supported. I would urge colleagues to take advantage of FASD training that draws on the lived experience of people in order to inform and change their practice.”

For more information about Antser VR, please visit: www.antser.com/antser-virtual-reality

Ambulance crews are training using virtual reality (VR) headsets to immerse them in traumatic situations such as domestic violence to better prepare them for real-life situations where vulnerable people are in need of help.

London Ambulance Service (LAS) has developed training using headsets which are loaded with true-to-life scenarios to help clinicians understand the impact of various types of abuse and trauma on the physical and mental wellbeing of vulnerable adults and children.

The simulated scenarios include scenes of domestic violence, sexual exploitation, drug abuse, child grooming, modern slavery and gang intimidation and give users a 360 degree view.

Alan Taylor, Head of Safeguarding, said: “The immersive experience allows ambulance staff to see things from a patient’s perspective and to help understand the fear so they truly empathise with their patient.

“This gives our crews a greater understanding of how vulnerable patients may display signs of trauma and means they can better protect children and adults at risk.”

Ambulance clinicians are often the first people to identify a vulnerable adult or child and they make safeguarding referrals to the appropriate agency if they are concerned about abuse or neglect.

LAS is the first ambulance service in the country to use the technology for safeguarding training.

Paramedic Patrick Hunter (pictured) said: “I thought I was unshockable but this was really sobering to watch. I was shocked but necessarily so. Seeing things from a child’s perspective helps us to understand how integral safeguarding is to our practice.

“Sometimes children won’t engage with us or might seem rude but this training shows that behind certain behaviour there may be a very vulnerable child in need of our help.”

The videos and technology were developed by Antser, one of the leading health and social care technology providers in the UK.

The scenarios are filmed using actors and will help clinicians when they make safeguarding referrals and ultimately help protect patients.

LAS is hoping bespoke scenarios could also be developed for call handlers as they can also help identify patients at risk when taking 999 calls.

The Service is also considering using VR technology for clinical education. It already has immersive training suites at its education centres where simulated scenarios play out.

To find out more about Antser VR, click here.

The team at Antser were thrilled to see their partnership with the London tri-borough was recently “Highly Commended” at the prestigious MJ Awards.

Antser and the tri-borough were given the title out of six finalists in the “Innovation in Children’s and Adults’ Services” category.

The winners were announced during a formal ceremony at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on Friday, 23rd June.

Serena Hadi, Head of Operations and Practice at Antser / Cornerstone VR, said: “We are delighted to have our project recognised at The MJ Awards. Our VR-enabled behaviour-change programme aims to increase empathy and shift attitudes to support positive change. VR has been revolutionary in social care and we are glad to see it get the recognition it deserves.”

Back in 2021, Antser partnered with three London boroughs – Redbridge, Enfield and Waltham Forest – to use virtual reality with young people identified as being vulnerable to exploitation and at a significant risk of extra-familial harm (EFH) and their parents, carers and the professionals working with them.

Antser / Cornerstone VR has been used across public and private sectors to target several topical issues including child sexual exploitation (CSE), domestic abuse (DA), gangs and knife crime.

Seven months into the 12-month project, Antser had trained 40 practitioners across the three boroughs, assisting the teams to use VR as a tool to help bring to life the perspectives of children and young people at risk of exploitation through immersive storytelling.

The aim of the project has been twofold – firstly to increase young people’s awareness of harmful behaviour and exploitative relationships and to open up conversations with young people about their risk of EFH.

The second aim of the project helps to support, as well as educate, parents and professionals working with children at risk to better understand and empathise with the issues facing young people and experience them from their point of view.

Between January and March 2022, Antser / Cornerstone VR was used 52 times in interventions conducted across the three London boroughs directly with vulnerable adolescents or their parents – 34 times with children at risk of EFH and 18 times with parents.

The responses showed that the VR programme had a positive impact on practitioners in terms of improving their own understanding of exploitation.

All feedback from children and young people who have been exposed to VR has also been positive and the sessions have enabled them to recognise their vulnerability and consciously think about their behaviour in the community.

For more information about Antser / Cornerstone VR, click here.

It was a bright start to the long weekend for the team at Antser after they were named winners at the National Technology Awards last week for their partnership with Northamptonshire Children’s Trust (NCT), using virtual reality (VR) to support foster placement stability.

As one of the UK’s leading health and social care technology providers, Antser won in the ‘Best Public Sector Project’ category in recognition of its use of Antser VR to improve the lives of looked after children.

NCT used Antser VR to help raise awareness among social care workers and foster carers of the long-term impact an adverse background can have on a child’s behaviour. By putting the viewer directly in the position of a child, the VR aims to increase empathy and modify behaviours of people working with and caring for children.

The award was particularly timely for Antser as it coincided with the end of Foster Care Fortnight, the UK’s biggest foster care awareness raising campaign, run by The Fostering Network.

Richard Dooner, CEO of Antser, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this National Technology Award for our work with NCT. VR has been proven to be a consistently strong and effective tool for supporting foster carers, specifically where the team feels concerned about the progress or stability of placements and this award is recognition of the impact this technology can have and the achievements of all involved as a result of it being used.”

In one case, NCT managed to change the outcome of a placement facing potential disruption for the child due to the carer requiring a more therapeutic approach to their needs. Using VR, the carer was able to reflect, develop their understanding and change their behaviour resulting in better care of the foster child.

Following the training, 100 percent of respondents agreed the VR experience made them think differently and consider alternative ways to respond and make decisions in their approach to looked after children. In addition, 75% of new users said the VR provided them with a deeper understanding of issues from the child’s perspective.

Julian Wooster, Chair of Northamptonshire Children’s Trust said: “It is fantastic to be part of an award winning initiative helping both young people and foster carers across Northamptonshire form stronger relationships and develop resilience.

“Our carers do an incredible job of supporting our children to understand their past experiences and behaviour, whilst working with them to utilise therapeutic strategies, giving them firm foundations for their future. Together, we can make a real difference to a child or young person’s life.”

Antser currently works with 25 local authority fostering and adoption teams and four independent fostering and adoption agencies.

Richard said: “Our work with NCT proves the benefits of using immersive VR technology to provide better outcomes for children and young people. So many foster care placements can fall apart simply due to a lack of understanding, but by placing people directly in the shoes of the child, it can make a huge difference to people’s relationships.

“The examples we have had from NCT are outstanding and it just goes to show the power of empathy and a slight behaviour change can literally change lives. A huge congratulations to all involved in making this project such a success.”

For more information about Antser VR, click here.

To see the full list of 2023 National Technology Award winners, click here.

For almost 15 years, Nicola and Kevin Woodall have been fostering children. After deciding that they wanted to be the people that gave children a chance, their fostering journey began.

Go to work. Come home. Go to work. Come home. Go on holiday. Come home. Go to work. Come home. It was this monotonous cycle that pushed Nicola and Kevin to become Foster Parents.

Since 2007, the couple have been supporting children in their local area, and have had their current foster children, who are siblings, with them for the last 11 years. The couple said: “We were so fed up with that “normal” routine and we thought there must be more to life than this. We wanted to give children something and give them a chance.”

Nicola was a former civil servant of the prison service, and while Kevin continues to run his own business, the couple have been fostering mostly long-term placements for the last 15 years.

One of the biggest learnings that the couple have taken away from being Foster Parents is that it is an entirely two-way street. Nicola said: “This job is so challenging, but so rewarding at the same time. You have to remember that these children give so much to you. It’s nice, and it makes you feel good when they come home and say that they have had a genuinely good day, or when they have left your care but continue to come back and see you. You know that they understand their journey with you, and the reasons behind some of the things that were said or done whilst they were in your care.”

Kevin added: “There are things that you wouldn’t even think of too. Like when a child insults you for the first time, because they finally feel confident or safe enough to do so, and you think ‘It’s working! I am getting to you!’. There is such a sense of achievement knowing that you are giving these children the best care that they could possibly have.”

Despite fostering for over a decade, Nicola and Kevin continue to train and learn more about fostering to ensure they are giving the best possible support to the children in their care. Nicola has recently completed her NVQ level 5 in Applied Therapeutic Practice. As Kevin isn’t the primary carer he doesn’t undertake as many courses and qualifications, but still attends sessions regularly.

Most recently, the couple have been through virtual reality training with the team at Flourish Fostering, using Antser’s VR technology to further their understanding of children who have endured traumatic starts in life.

Nicola said: “Even though we have been doing this for a long time, this type of training really hits home. You learn the exact impact that certain things have had on the children in your care. It’s hard when you haven’t experienced these things yourself to know exactly what your children are going through, but the power of VR training means that you can feel it. It’s an attack on all of your senses.”

Nicola continued: “The VR training shows lots of children’s behaviours, and the root cause of them. It helps link together your own children’s experiences and actions, and you think to yourself ‘this all makes sense now.’ Our youngest is now 15, and we can break down the reason for the way she behaved when she was a young child.”

Their recent training took them through the entire life of a child who has lived through abuse or trauma, starting from when they are in the womb, through their entire childhood, until they are removed from their own families and placed into care. Nicola and Kevin said: “You feel like you are actually living through the training. For the first time we were able to see things entirely through the eyes of the child, not just the Foster Parent on the receiving end. It gave us a whole new world of perspective.”

Having supported their current foster children for the last 11 years, Nicola and Kevin have learnt a lot about what it takes to be supportive Foster Parents. The couple emphasised that being a Foster Parent is not without its ups and downs, but their extensive training has helped them to work through difficult situations.

Kevin said that learning as you go along is all part and parcel of being a Foster Parent, but if VR training was available at the start of their fostering journey, it would have put them years ahead of where they started.

Kevin added: “I can’t imagine the hugely positive impact that this will have on Foster Parents who are just starting out. We recommend the VR training to everyone we know who fosters as it makes such a positive difference.”

Throughout all of their training and 15 years of fostering, Nicola and Kevin have loved being able to support children and young people for the better. Kevin explained how there is a myth surrounding children in care: “People think that children are in care because of things that they have done, but it is purely because of what they have been through or had done to them. We’ve been through some difficult times with the children in our care, but through ongoing training, and pulling together we have made a real difference to their lives.”

“We even have conversations with our children about the training that we have been on. We think it’s good for them to understand what we’ve learnt, and how it applies to them and their behaviour, and they find it interesting too. They understand the impact that they can have on the rest of the household, and we all learn how to do things differently to help each other. It’s always a two-way street.”

To find out more about the Antser Virtual Reality Programme, click here.
