Flourish Fostering, an Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding’ independent fostering organisation, has become one of the first in the UK to pioneer virtual reality to tackle prevalent topics, such as child sexual exploitation (CSE).

Antser VR has been implemented across the organisation to upskill Foster Parents in advanced subjects more quickly, thereby providing a realistic 360-degree perspective of the child’s world and what may bring them into care.

Talking about their first experience with the VR training, Foster Parents embraced and welcomed the innovative training. Starting their fostering this year, one Foster Parent said: “One thing that stands out to me from the training, is you are a toddler, sitting on the floor and you can’t move around. Mum and dad are there, dad comes up in your face and screams at you, and you really feel the fear and panic, and rationally you know you’re sitting in a room of people and safe, but you are shut off. It is all so consuming that you forget and become immersed in the experience.”

One Foster Parent couple, Nicola and Kevin Woodall, who has been fostering for almost 15 years, said: “We understand lots about children, their behaviour and what they have been through, but virtual reality provides you with a better perspective. When you look at children from their point of view and not as a Foster Parent, it is a whole new world of understanding.”

One Foster Parent added: “It’s all very well being told or shown the statistics or being shown the data, but it’s different actually experiencing it first-hand for yourself from the child’s point of view”.

When comparing Antser VR enabled training to previous training they have received, Foster Parents said it was unrivalled. Sharon Hausrath, a Foster Parent for over 11 years, said:

“Even with a master’s degree in therapeutic fostering and adoption, the VR training allowed me to learn something very new, and even though I am highly qualified and knew a lot about trauma and neglect, I found the virtual reality training offered greater insight that all the other training I have had over the years never did.

“Training with the perspective of a VR headset touches a different part of your learning. You’re more aware of what situations must feel like. Using the headset, it gives a different perspective, and allows you to fully see different environments of what it must be like as a child.”

Virtual reality helps you better understand prevalent topics often faced as a Foster Parent. One Foster Parent said: “When I did the training, everyone there had their own experiences of looking after children, but the VR allowed you to tap into a real, visceral, emotive experience. It gives you a different dimension of understanding.”

“It really allows you to see the reason that some children behave the way that they do. They are just communicating their trauma, which is different to saying it is because of how they feel.”

Designed to help increase understanding, awareness and empathy surrounding children with adverse experiences, Foster Parents can apply the VR training in their day to day lives with their children. One Foster Parent added: “I can apply the training to the children in my care because I have seen an example of what they have actually been through. It has allowed me to see that trauma is built from literally inside the womb.”

Sharon Hausrath said: “The first VR film I watched was called the ‘Unborn Child’ and having had the experience of a child living in a home that had suffered this kind of trauma, it was very insightful. I have previously read a lot about this subject matter but coming at it with the perspective of the VR headset, touches a different part of your learning. Your emotions are heightened of what it must be like for the child, as the VR headset puts you in the footsteps of the child and it makes you realise and empathise with how traumatic the situations are that children often find themselves in.”

In terms of recommendations, every Foster Parent stated they would recommend to other Foster Parents and even those in other professions. Sharon stated: “This training would be valuable for other professionals in the social care field and not just Foster Parents. To view these situations from a child’s point of view would provide so much understanding. I would happily advocate this VR training for children, education providers, health providers and anyone who is struggling to understand children’s behaviours.”

Another Foster Parent added: “I would definitely recommend Antser’s VR training. I would be interested to do training in other areas too like gangs, grooming and drug violence. It really helps to extend conversations and thought processes around a particular scenario.”

For new Foster Parents starting out, Nicola and Kevin Woodall said:

“We already have recommended the VR training. We think it will give new Foster Parents such valuable insight. It can be difficult because you experience first-hand the trauma that these children go through, but it paints a very real picture of what your children have been through, which is valuable to your training and understanding as a Foster Parent.”

“We have had conversations with our own Foster Children about our training and what we have learnt. We think it’s good for them to understand what we learn about and how it affects all of us. One of our children is particularly fascinated by the training, even though it really relates to her own life. It helps us all to learn how we can do things differently to help each other, and that it is a two-way street.”

For more information about Antser VR, click here.

For more information about Flourish Fostering, click here.

In addition, around a third (31%) said they would now try to better understand other perspectives of abuse and be more aware of their attitude and behaviour towards victims, as well as spending more time with them following a call out to an incident.

This February, Antser will be hosting a free webinar, ‘Using Virtual Reality to Improve Practice in Frontline Policing’, on 7 February 2021.

During the webinar, Mandy Miranda, VR Lead Trainer and Facilitator at Antser will be joined by John Carroll, Detective Superintendent & Head of Public Protection at the East Area Basic Command Unit in the Met Police and Gita Hargun, Service Manager, Families Together Hub at London Borough of Redbridge to discuss two pilots using Virtual Reality (VR) to turn around perpetrators, survivors, children and young people’s lives in incidents involving domestic abuse, child sexual exploitation and child criminal exploitation.

John Carroll said:

“As the power of technology continues to grow, we have been fortunate to have been able to experience first hand how VR can directly help frontline officers to better understand the impact of domestic abuse and to create a safer place for children, young people and survivors.

This webinar demonstrates the value of virtual reality as both a learning, development and an intervention tool to improve practice in frontline policing. Attendees will have the opportunity to gain insight into how VR has been used to aid officers’ understanding the importance of taking decisive action at the first incident to reduce the risk of repeat occurrences, making a tangible difference to victim, child and perpetrator.

I would encourage new officers joining the force or frontline teams who have been in the service for the past decade to come along to Antser’s webinar to better understand and see domestic abuse incidents through the eyes of the child.”

For more information or to register your attendance, visit our Event Page or book direct for free on the form above.

“After a really tough year, it is great to feel the togetherness that a kit can bring to the team. The boys look really smart in their new training kit, and it is bringing on their confidence leaps and bounds.”

Karl Fellows, Volunteer Coach at Solihull Moors FC U9s sat down to discuss the recent Antser training kit sponsorship and what it means for the growing community football team.

Becoming his son’s football coach by accident, Karl said: “Their previous coach had to leave the team and there was no one to pick it up in his place. With no one stepping in it was likely that the team would fold, so to stop that happening I volunteered on a temporary basis and am still here two seasons later.”

With a strong background in football, Karl is deeply passionate about the game. Karl shared: “I had previously worked at Aston Villa FC for a long time, so it felt right to me to jump back into football with my own son.”

Solihull Moors FC has over 200 volunteers who all help to coach and support the teams of all ages up to the U16s. With 105 teams, it is known to be one of the largest children’s football clubs in the area.

With many of the youth and junior teams heavily reliant on volunteers, Karl’s mother kindly sponsored the team to enable them to have training jumpers to keep them warm through the colder months.

After hearing of this jumper donation, local Richard Dooner, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Antser, a leading health and social care technology provider, decided to donate the team a full set of training tops.

Karl shared: “We all just wanted to say a huge thank you to Richard and everyone at Antser for the generous donation. The children look fantastic, and it gives us a real sense of togetherness and community.

“Prospective children and their parents really pay attention to us now, and people comment on how smart everyone looks. It gives us a real community-feel to be proud of, and we know that not everyone is lucky enough to have that.”

Karl continued: “The feel-good factor really is through the roof. I’m not sure that the children totally understand the power behind the gesture, but the families and I certainly do, and you can definitely tell the kit donation has helped their confidence.”

As thousands of people across the UK did, the football team had a difficult year throughout the pandemic and lockdown. Karl said: “It was hard. Our team changed a little bit and some of the players couldn’t come back to the club which was a real shame.

“Sport can have such a positive impact on children and young people’s social skills and confidence, so when they didn’t have access to that it was quite difficult. I always say to people, get your kids involved in sport, even if it’s not football, it can have a hugely positive impact on them.

“On behalf of everyone involved with the U9s at Solihull Moors FC, we wanted to say a huge thank you to all at Antser for their generous donation to our team.”

For more information on the club you can visit their website here: https://www.solihullmoorsfc.co.uk/teams/youth-junior/

For more information on Antser, please feel free to reach out to us on: hello@antser.com.

An ‘Outstanding’ independent fostering organisation has become one of the first in the UK to use pioneering virtual reality (VR) technology across its services, helping to train practitioners to better understand childhood experiences of trauma and exploitation.

Flourish Fostering, which specialises in providing bespoke therapeutic care to children and young people, is using Antser’s Virtual Reality (VR) technology to tackle prevalent topics, such as child sexual exploitation.

Antser VR has been implemented across the organisation to upskill Foster Parents in advanced subjects more quickly, thereby providing a realistic 360-degree perspective of the child’s world and what brings them into care. Antser is renowned for providing ground-breaking solutions to the health, education and social care sectors.

The partnership with Antser will help Flourish, recently rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, ensure it recruits and develops Foster Parents with the emotional resilience and in-depth understanding that is essential for them to develop therapeutic fostering skills and, ultimately, to maintain an attachment to their foster child during challenging times.

Antser’s VR films allow social workers and Foster Parents to walk in the footsteps of children and young people, helping them to better understand the root cause of difficult or disruptive behaviours, thereby increasing empathy and insight, allowing them to modify their responses to de-escalate and manage the situation.

These behaviours are more common in children and young people who have experienced trauma and can become more complex as young people reach adolescence, with age 12 years plus often being deemed the ‘most difficult’ to manage. Understanding the root causes of disruptive behaviours through innovative and engaging training programmes and intervention tools can prevent school and family placement disruption and teach people how to respond effectively.

Since its implementation, VR has been used in introductory training, directly with Foster Parents in their homes, and as a one-to-one tool with young people to raise awareness of issues such as grooming and county lines.

In a survey of Foster Parents and social workers, over half of respondents (60%) had never used virtual reality before. Results also revealed that after using the VR, 100% of respondents said they had a deeper understanding of the child’s perspective and that the VR had equipped them with the knowledge to make an impact in their work.

One Foster Parent who trialled the VR said: “This course was great, it really shows the child’s perspective. I feel it could also help new Foster Parents understand the things that could either help or hinder in certain situations”.

A Flourish Fostering social worker said: “The technology enables the user to step back from emotions and absorb the message, and makes it engaging to understand and remember. It’s really useful in Foster Parent training for specific issues, using different approaches for the same scenarios that deliver positive responses from children and young people on how adults dealt with challenging situations.”

Dr Mica Douglas, Managing Director of Flourish Fostering, said:

“The ability to enable Foster Parents to virtually ‘stand in the shoes’ of a traumatised child is invaluable in promoting empathy and understanding of the meaning behind the behaviour of their foster child.

“During our recent Ofsted inspection, the VR was also used by the three visiting inspectors, who were all very impressed by its capabilities.”

Antser VR is also benefiting Flourish’s existing training programme, which includes a Level 5 Diploma in Applied Therapeutic Practice. Knowledge is accelerated through the use of VR and made more meaningful for the participants, said Mica Douglas.

VR has been validated as an effective learning tool – PwC found that VR learning, compared to classroom or e-learning, is proven to deliver 4x faster learning, 4x more focused learning and 40% more confidence in applying what has been learnt.

Richard Dooner, CEO at Antser, said:

“I am excited about our partnership with Flourish Fostering and welcome their commitment to using virtual reality to enhance how they support their Foster Parents and practitioners to further support children and young people.

“Their thinking is ahead of many independent providers in how they can change lives through letting Foster Parents take a walk in the footsteps of children. Each time Flourish Fostering uses the virtual reality films, they find new ways it can and does help them achieve their goal. I’m particularly pleased to see they are embedding the virtual reality films into their level 5 diploma.”

With over 30 years’ experience, Antser provides better outcomes for children, adults, families, and communities by delivering training and practice using virtual reality within child protection and safeguarding, across children’s and adults’ sectors in the UK.

For more information about Antser VR, click here.

As part of our acknowledging, embracing and celebrating diversity; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ), Pride Month encourages people to embrace who they are and let the world know.

It is important for us all to possess a knowledge base of good practice when it comes to matters of equality and diversity, to combat inequalities in our services. Without this kind of training, workers can often be uninformed or biased towards groups outside their own experience.

As a result, we have developed our ‘Supporting LGBTQ+ Children and Young People’ course, which aims to develop the participant’s knowledge and awareness of LGBTQIA+.

By attending this course, individuals working with children and young people are invited to look at the language they use and consider whether this promotes the rights of people who identify as LGBTQIA+. The course also explores how people can support those they work with to express their sexuality and actively establish relationships, as well as recognising mental health issues that can arise as a result of LGBTQIA+ issues and the confidentiality and safeguarding issues surrounding the LGBTQ+ looked after child / young person.

In addition to this, we consider the legislation in relation to LGBTQIA+ and the duties this places on social care workers. As such, this course is ideal for mixed groups of adult and children’s practitioners as well as partner agencies.

For more information about our ‘Supporting LGBTQ+ Children and Young People’ course, visit our course page here.

This week we joined with our new VR Lead Trainer and Facilitator, Mandy Miranda, who shared what inspired her to work with us and discuss her role at Antser.

What is your role at Antser?

I am the new Lead Trainer and Facilitator for Virtual Reality. I deliver the certification training; so when a local authority, adoption agency or an education provider contracts with us for our VR behaviour change programme, I’m the person that does their verification training.

When I’m not doing VR training, I design and deliver training for children and adults sector professionals.

Why did you choose Antser?

I was ready to retire, however, via my profile on LinkedIn a recruiter found my details and passed them onto Antser. After they interviewed me on the Monday morning, I was then interviewed by Antser on the Wednesday night and the rest is history.

I was really excited about the whole aspect of VR. I had been a therapeutic parenting trainer for the last seven years for foster carers and social workers and I just thought this was the most amazing way to help foster carers to get under the skin of children to really understand them.

I think that while you can become more knowledgeable in standard classroom scenario, research shows we can embed and learn 4x faster with immersive films in 360-degree vision in out VR headsets.

I’ve been delivering training now for the past month and it has been great giving practitioners more tools for their toolbox and I think they’re important tools that can be used everywhere.

My dream would be to get magistrates and judges to use the VR to view the individual standing in front of them in the criminal justice system from a different perspective, particularly those who have been in care and in and out of institutions and prison all their life, to gain a meaningful understanding about what their first years were like and how that impacted on their brain development, bringing together a more trauma informed approach.

How did you get into your chosen career and why did you choose it?

I started off in advertising and telesales. When my children were little, I attended a course called “Out the House’ and it was all about throwing away all those negative self-images that you’ve got about your possible achievements and began thinking outside the box. We were the first year of Access students who had no GCSE’s or O-levels and I absolutely loved it, completing the equivalent of A Levels, over the next four years, I went on to do a Degree and my qualification in Social Work.

I have nearly 30 years’ experience as a social worker and manager in Adult and Children’s Social Care specialising in training and Therapeutic Parenting, Children Centre Management, Criminal & Sexual Child Exploitation, Radicalisation & Extremism and Harmful Sexual Behaviours.

My track record spans across Mental Health services in following roles; Dual Diagnosis social worker in Community Mental Health Team for Homeless, Mother & Baby Perinatal Mental Health Unit, Inpatient YP Self Harm Unit, Addiction services.

I have also held additional locum roles in Adult & Children’s Learning Disabilities, Care Leavers Team, Child Protection Assessment & Safeguarding, Residential Rehabilitation Assessment Team, and I have been a Humanitarian Aid Social Worker in Sri Lanka after the Tsunami.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career?

I think one of the biggest challenges is that there are lots of stereotypes around mental health and addiction. I think that’s also why I was keen to work at Antser, to look at using the VR to help people grasp who the person in front of you truly is. It is a great way to get people to stand in someone else’s shoes for a little while. I think the biggest problem was getting people to have a non-judgmental attitude.

In my career I was very lucky because I kept moving from different roles and I didn’t get burnt out, which nobody in social care wants to do.

In regard to your new role, what are you most excited about?

I am most excited about changing lives. I think VR is a gamechanger and to give social workers a new tool to have in their toolbox is the greatest gift to busy professionals, I believe it will change lives and that it will improve outcomes for children and young people.

I think VR can be a part of the assessment process, for example you could really give foster parents a more realistic understanding of the environment these children lived in. If we could all remember that all behaviour is communication, then maybe we’d be a bit more professionally curious to understand what that behaviour is all about.

This week we sat down with our new VR Service Manager, Abby Cooke, who shared insight into her role at Antser and what drew her to working with us.

What is your role at Antser?

I am the VR Service Manager, so I will be supporting professionals to embed the Antser Virtual Reality (VR) programme into practice with our partners. From linking up with them in meetings, to touching base on how they are using the Virtual Reality programme and exploring any issues with which we could be supporting them. I will also be connecting them with other partners who use the VR programme, to grow their use of VR into their services and share good practice. Additionally, I will be co-delivering training. This is the training that we provide to partners to certify them in using the VR programme. I’m also a part of the Subject Matter Expert group, which is a great space to reflect on developments with other practitioners.

Why did you choose Antser?

I joined Antser in March, and prior to joining the team, I was a social worker for 10 years. Just before leaving my last job, I was an adoption support team manager and we actually started using VR in 2019.

I was one of the managers that helped develop VR within our services and I really fell in love with the tool and loved how it could bring about positive change. Alongside my love of VR and working closely with Alison, when I saw the role come through it is just one of those opportunities you don’t see often in social work – to develop a tool that could enhance professionals’ practice and support families.

Within social work and child protection, to have a tool where it doesn’t feel like you are shaming the family but where they can see the experience through a child’s eyes, it feels a lot different to when we try and explain it. Sometimes it can come across that we are this professional who is being really negative and they feel like it is a personal attack, so to have a tool you can use alongside supporting families is massive. I feel it is also great for families where they have additional needs, as having a visual aid this can support embed training they may have attended. For professionals it is a great reflective tool.

How did you get into your chosen career and why did you choose it?

When I was in school, they didn’t have many opportunities to understand which career path you may want to take, it was very much you do your GCSEs and then some sixth form courses that didn’t really take you anywhere. I always knew I wanted to be in a profession that was related to caring for others, but I automatically thought that was nursing. After my A-Levels I went to University to become a Nurse but realised after a year, that this wasn’t the profession for me. Once I learned more about social work, that’s where I changed from the health sector to social. After that, I went to do an access course at college to make sure that it was something I was interested in, and from there I realised this was where my passion lay.

Social care is such a massive area, and I knew I wanted to understand a child and family’s perspective, why certain situations happen and how you can bring about positive change. As a social worker that is quite hard as you often are not seen as the support.

When I qualified as a Social Worker, the services were very much combined, so you had child protection, child in need, children in care and adoption as one team. Once they started to specialise and branch off, I went into adoption. Initially being the social worker for children with a plan of adoption, but then moving into supporting adoptive families post Adoption Order, and assessing Prospective Adopters. In the last two years I’ve been an Adoption Team Manager for a Regional Adoption Agency.

I’ve taken a number of paths in my career but kept coming back to adoption. I think in adoption you get more time to step back and reflect, and understand the real impact of early childhood trauma and how we can support children, but also their families, so that’s a real interest of mine. So, when this VR tool came around, I knew immediately this would really support people greatly.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career?

In my career in social work, I have found one of the hardest challenges has been removing children, because you never want to remove a child from their family. Since becoming a parent, you really understand and appreciate the impact of that on the child and for the parents a whole lot more.

In my career, trying to understand your pathway, where you belong in all the social work world and where your interests are has been hard.

Once you’re in social work, you find all these other interests. For example, when you go from a social worker to a manager, it’s like another world. When I stepped up to become a manager, that was a massive challenge because you see the world of social care through a completely different lens, but with that it is really interesting. I found passions I didn’t realise I had, including supporting staff, social workers and social work support officers to be confident in themselves as professionals.

When I started my management journey, the adoption agency I was with was transitioning to a Regional Adoption Agency, where four local authorities came together to be one. That was very challenging as it was four different ways of working and all to achieve the same goal, so there was a transition through this but they are doing great and delivering an amazing service.

There have been quite a few different challenges personally and professionally during my career, but it’s been a very interesting journey and it’s never boring.

In regard to your new role, what are you most excited about?

I would really love to focus on supporting the partners to get into the nitty gritty of using VR and actually helping them to integrate VR into their practice.

Once there is confidence around using VR and knowing how to start, people will just run with it. I am looking forward to actually evidence-basing that and making sure we get evaluations back to further understand the impact it’s having.

I think it will just strengthen the VR programme, strengthen practice, and make a huge difference – so getting into the nitty gritty is quite what I’m excited to do.

Learn more about our Virtual Reality programme here.
