What is your role at Antser?

I am the Head of Marketing at Antser – my role is to ensure that our core message and vision are reflected across the multiple sectors we operate in, and in our relationships with our partners and clients.

What do you like most about your role?

The positive societal impact is a very important driver for me. I truly believe that our work delivers better outcomes for children, young people, adults and ultimately entire communities.

Another aspect which I love about my work is the uniqueness of our products and services – no one day is the same when working at Antser. People never stop innovating and it’s a true pleasure to work with so many experts within different fields. We have a saying at Antser, that ‘no idea is too small’ – it’s the collection of these many ideas and their reception through a collaborative work environment and management support that makes it possible for us to innovate.

How did you get into your chosen career and why did you choose it?

My career path has been paved with everything from joy and opportunities to bumps in the road and glass ceilings – and if I were to describe it in one word I would say it’s been a rollercoaster – in a very positive way.

I started my career as a young architect in Rome. Working as an intern during my studies helped me understand the complexity of my role and what I enjoyed most about it. I worked on the delivery of international building projects in Africa, the US and Europe before I was presented with the opportunity to study marketing and organisational leadership in the United States – where I joined a group of friends in a programme that shifted most of our careers into a completely different direction.

When I returned to Rome after this journey, I decided to pursue a career solely focused on marketing. I lived and worked in Malta before permanently moving to the UK, undertaking different marketing and BD roles in different sectors, from retail to commercial and residential property before moving to the social care, health and education sectors within Antser.

I chose this career because it allowed me to explore my creativity and commercial ability on many different levels – and being an architect and a marketing professional has given me the ability to sometimes ‘see things from a different angle’.

What achievement are you most proud of?

To me, there is no one single achievement that I am most proud of – I think we should all be proud of the actions that take us to where we are in the present.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career?

Starting over and adapting to each culture that I have been a part of. I am originally from Romania, and lived, studied and worked across multiple cultures and countries. It’s been the biggest challenge but also the most beautiful aspect of my career – I feel like I am constantly learning something new each day.

What advice would you give to women looking to enter a career in your industry?

Be your own biggest champion and focus on the future, but also try to find mentorship in the leaders you admire and learn from their advice.

Be proactive and have a positive attitude in everything that you do, anything can be achieved if you have the drive and motivation to push yourself beyond your own self-limiting beliefs. Most importantly, take all the opportunities you can to learn something new. Marketing is an ever-changing and fast-paced field and an open-mind is key to delivering the best results.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #ChooseToChallenge. How do you think we can take steps to challenge inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes and help forge an inclusive world?

I choose to challenge the idea that men and women have different professional capabilities. I think that we are still a long way from creating equality in the workplace in many parts of the world. In many situations, women have to choose between having a family and a career, and I simply think that we need to change that mentality as it’s only holding us back.

I strongly believe that key to this is education, and tackling unconscious bias – and this starts from an early age. I’m extremely proud to be a part of a work environment where women leaders are truly valued for their capabilities and encouraged to step forward.

What is your role at Antser?

Head of Assessments – I have oversight of the assessment service, which provides independent assessments to courts, local authorities and panels.

What do you like most about your role?

The team – working here is like being part of a family, it sounds a bit cheesy but it has been my experience since my first day and the main reason I’ve stayed with the company as long as I have. Everyone is really friendly, down to earth, supportive and hardworking and that makes such a difference when the work you do is challenging. I also find the work we do so interesting. I like how varied and fast paced it is; having worked here for over 10 years I really enjoy the different challenges we are faced with each day, supporting our assessor base and knowing that in some way we are making a positive difference to vulnerable people’s lives.

How did you get into your chosen career and why did you choose it?

If I’m honest, I kind of fell into this career! I studied psychology at university and had planned that I would pursue this as a career. However, having finished my degree, I wasn’t sure what area of psychology I wanted to specialise in, and teamed with the costs for a masters degree, I didn’t want to jump into something too quickly. Having spent six months working in a pub in London, worrying I wasn’t progressing quickly enough in my career (far too much pressure to put on my 22 year old self!), I decided to move home and applied for the administrative assistant role at Carter Brown, which I thought looked quite interesting as psychologists worked there. Since that time, I’ve been so lucky to have had the opportunity to progress into different positions and become a manager, which has led me to my current role. I’m actually really happy it happened this way as I also always enjoyed the business side of things, so it’s a nice mix of the both for me.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Around 7 years ago, we were asked to take an existing service (now our Local Authority Carer Based assessment service) and integrate it into our service offering. At that time it was a relatively small and new service. I was given the opportunity to take the lead with the work, managing the cases and to be the team manager. Within two years the service went from taking 30 referrals a month to taking around 100 and being profitable. The service continues to be a consistent part of our current offering, so that makes me really proud when I reflect on what I achieved.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career?

Again, I would say managing and integrating an existing service was really challenging. As this was also my first experience as a manager, I had a lot of learning to do in that area as well as learning about a new service and adapting to a different way of working. I was very much in at the deep end and there were definitely times where I thought I wasn’t able to do it, but I’m so glad I persisted and I’ve gained so much from it.

What advice would you give to women looking to enter a career in your industry?

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to start higher up the ladder, progress too quickly, or have all the knowledge in the world about the industry – basically give yourself time to adjust and learn. There’s so much to learn both from a sector level and from a business level; the learning is ongoing, so don’t expect to know everything straightaway (or ever!) but equally don’t let that deter or worry you as that’s what makes it challenging and exciting. For me achieving success is supported by a good working knowledge, which you only really achieve by being involved in the day to day delivery. So take your time to learn the basics, don’t be afraid to ask what you might think are obvious questions, don’t underestimate yourself and use your time to learn as much as you can to master your role, because that is what really helps the others around you and enables success.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #ChooseToChallenge. How do you think we can take steps to challenge inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes and help forge an inclusive world?

To be honest and share our experiences, both good and bad so we can learn and support one another in this in order to continue to make change. For me, seeing more and more the acknowledgement of women’s contribution and successes is so important as it breaks down stereotypes and gives belief of what you can achieve, and equally what negatives you don’t have to stand for to get there. I think we have to show strength by showing we can be vulnerable, and that the two aren’t exclusive of one another. Hopefully in some way we can share the tools needed to challenge inequality or bias as and when it occurs, or even before it occurs!

What is your role at Antser?

Training and Development Manager at Antser Learning (formally known as Reconstruct).

What do you like most about your role?

I like that my job is really varied along with being customer facing.

I feel a sense of pride selling the training and knowing that our training is having a positive impact on other people.

How did you get into your chosen career and why did you choose it?

I got into this chosen career through an apprenticeship programme 20 years ago. I then stayed with the same Fostering Company for 14 years, progressing through varies roles.

From a young age I use to love going to work with my mum using typewriters and typing, and I always knew I wanted to work in an office.

From the beginning of my career until now (20 years) my role has always been supporting making change to children, young people and vulnerable adults, and this is something I am very passionate about.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Throughout my career I have a number of achievements that I have felt proud of, one of those is being in same line of work from being an apprentice until now.

The one that is most recent, and will definitely go down in history, is when the Covid-19 pandemic hit in March 2020. Following this, I managed to convert face to face training to online training. Overnight we had no training planned, and within a month we were back up and running, delivering courses virtually. Against all odds, by the end of 2020 we managed to deliver over 170 courses.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career?

I have faced a number of challenges in my career, but I think the most challenging has to be the last year since lock down, even though it formed part of my biggest achievement.

Being a full time working mum, with 2 children who needed help home schooling, was challenging in itself. On top of this I knew that I had training being cancelled and I needed to get it re-booked – but before I could do that I needed to work out how we were going to deliver it. (Who would have thought a year ago Zoom was un heard of!)

I embraced the challenge and, with the support of the team, within a month we were delivering online training – and my children had embraced the home schooling. (Ok not fully embraced it!)

What advice would you give to women looking to enter a career in your industry?

My advice would be believe in yourself!
I will be honest, I didn’t really enjoy school and studying, but I always knew that I wanted to work. Apprenticeships was certainly the best route I could have taken. I do not have a long list of qualifications, no university degree, but what I have shown is that if you believe in yourself and have a passion for your work, show commitment and drive, you can take your chosen career path.

Never think the impossible cannot be done!

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #ChooseToChallenge. How do you think we can take steps to challenge inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes and help forge an inclusive world?

Fortunately, I have not experienced inequality within my line of work, and believe this is a representative of the commitment the organisation has with continued and timely discussions, and training to recognise individual differences and value the diverse culture we live in.

As a mother, I believe one of the key influences we can have is to teach our children not only that they can choose to challenge inequality, bias and stereotypes, but also that they themselves have the freedom to be who they desire, and to provide an open, honest, inclusive and supportive environment for them to grow in.

What is your role at Antser?

Learning and Development Director.

What do you like most about your role?

The opportunity to make real change to people’s lives by helping them to see things in a different way, learn new skills and challenge their norms. Learning shouldn’t stop when we leave school. We learn every day in lots of different ways and this role is about capturing people’s imaginations through our training interventions and supporting them to take the time to stop and think – often a luxury in our busy lives. It’s a very people centric role and I am definitely a people person.

How did you get into your chosen career and why did you choose it?

I studied Business Studies at university, but didn’t specialise in a particular area. After graduating and spending ten years working in a number of different roles, I fell into a training sales role, which is where I first discovered my love of all things learning and development related. I decided to go back to university to do my masters in Human Resource Management, so that I could develop myself further in this field.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Working full time, doing my master’s degree and being pregnant with my first child, all at the same time! I could barely reach the keyboard to finish my dissertation. It was a challenge, but I was incredibly proud of what I achieved on all fronts during this time.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career?

Juggling a young family and a career is challenging. Trying to keep abreast of industry/sector trends in learning, ensuring I/we as an organisation stay relevant and keep innovating/driving forward, whilst looking after my little people is a constant juggling act, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

What advice would you give to women looking to enter a career in your industry?

L&D typically attracts more women than men. However, as the roles become more senior, the balance shifts and more males are found in the top roles. My advice would be to take your time to explore if this is something you really want to do and if it is, go for it! Be inquisitive and challenging and get to know every aspect of the industry and all it has to offer to find the perfect fit for you, and let’s begin to close that gender inequality gap.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #ChooseToChallenge. How do you think we can take steps to challenge inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes and help forge an inclusive world?

Be brave and have that conversation! If something doesn’t feel/sit right with you, don’t be afraid to say so – the more we talk, the more we learn and that’s ultimately what I’m all about. #lifelonglearning
