In a recent episode of the ‘Dear Social Worker, Let’s Talk’ podcast, Antser’s VR Service Manager, Shalene Lemmie, was featured, shedding light on how virtual reality (VR) is transforming the field of social work.

Hosted by Le’Siran Edwards, a passionate advocate for the social work community, this episode, titled “Creating Trauma-Informed Social Workers Using Virtual Reality,” explores how Cornerstone VR, part of The Antser Group, helps to facilitate trauma-informed approaches to social care, allowing a new perspective for social workers, from those new to the profession through to those who have been in the field for years.

Le’Siran first experienced Cornerstone VR at a recent social work event. The impact she found using the VR had was so remarkable that she was keen to invite Shalene to delve deeper into this groundbreaking technology on her inspiring podcast series.

With over a decade of children’s social work experience, Le’Siran shared:

“The main reason why I’m so excited [to have you on the podcast] is because I’ve tried this, so I know exactly what the VR is about. I’ve experienced it and I still talk about it to this day. The impact was so great, so I’m really excited for social workers to hear about this.”

Listen to the podcast here:

For more information about Cornerstone VR, click here

Flourish Fostering, an Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding’ independent fostering organisation, has become one of the first in the UK to pioneer virtual reality to tackle prevalent topics, such as child sexual exploitation (CSE).

Antser VR has been implemented across the organisation to upskill Foster Parents in advanced subjects more quickly, thereby providing a realistic 360-degree perspective of the child’s world and what may bring them into care.

Talking about their first experience with the VR training, Foster Parents embraced and welcomed the innovative training. Starting their fostering this year, one Foster Parent said: “One thing that stands out to me from the training, is you are a toddler, sitting on the floor and you can’t move around. Mum and dad are there, dad comes up in your face and screams at you, and you really feel the fear and panic, and rationally you know you’re sitting in a room of people and safe, but you are shut off. It is all so consuming that you forget and become immersed in the experience.”

One Foster Parent couple, Nicola and Kevin Woodall, who has been fostering for almost 15 years, said: “We understand lots about children, their behaviour and what they have been through, but virtual reality provides you with a better perspective. When you look at children from their point of view and not as a Foster Parent, it is a whole new world of understanding.”

One Foster Parent added: “It’s all very well being told or shown the statistics or being shown the data, but it’s different actually experiencing it first-hand for yourself from the child’s point of view”.

When comparing Antser VR enabled training to previous training they have received, Foster Parents said it was unrivalled. Sharon Hausrath, a Foster Parent for over 11 years, said:

“Even with a master’s degree in therapeutic fostering and adoption, the VR training allowed me to learn something very new, and even though I am highly qualified and knew a lot about trauma and neglect, I found the virtual reality training offered greater insight that all the other training I have had over the years never did.

“Training with the perspective of a VR headset touches a different part of your learning. You’re more aware of what situations must feel like. Using the headset, it gives a different perspective, and allows you to fully see different environments of what it must be like as a child.”

Virtual reality helps you better understand prevalent topics often faced as a Foster Parent. One Foster Parent said: “When I did the training, everyone there had their own experiences of looking after children, but the VR allowed you to tap into a real, visceral, emotive experience. It gives you a different dimension of understanding.”

“It really allows you to see the reason that some children behave the way that they do. They are just communicating their trauma, which is different to saying it is because of how they feel.”

It has allowed me to see that trauma is built from literally inside the womb.”

Sharon Hausrath said: “The first VR film I watched was called the ‘Unborn Child’ and having had the experience of a child living in a home that had suffered this kind of trauma, it was very insightful. I have previously read a lot about this subject matter but coming at it with the perspective of the VR headset, touches a different part of your learning. Your emotions are heightened of what it must be like for the child, as the VR headset puts you in the footsteps of the child and it makes you realise and empathise with how traumatic the situations are that children often find themselves in.”

In terms of recommendations, every Foster Parent stated they would recommend to other Foster Parents and even those in other professions. Sharon stated: “This training would be valuable for other professionals in the social care field and not just Foster Parents. To view these situations from a child’s point of view would provide so much understanding. I would happily advocate this VR training for children, education providers, health providers and anyone who is struggling to understand children’s behaviours.”

Another Foster Parent added: “I would definitely recommend Antser’s VR training. I would be interested to do training in other areas too like gangs, grooming and drug violence. It really helps to extend conversations and thought processes around a particular scenario.”

For new Foster Parents starting out, Nicola and Kevin Woodall said:

“We already have recommended the VR training. We think it will give new Foster Parents such valuable insight. It can be difficult because you experience first-hand the trauma that these children go through, but it paints a very real picture of what your children have been through, which is valuable to your training and understanding as a Foster Parent.”

“We have had conversations with our own Foster Children about our training and what we have learnt. We think it’s good for them to understand what we learn about and how it affects all of us. One of our children is particularly fascinated by the training, even though it really relates to her own life. It helps us all to learn how we can do things differently to help each other, and that it is a two-way street.”

For more information about Antser VR, click here.

For more information about Flourish Fostering, click here.

Antser has recently partnered with the Met Police to enable police officers to use their innovative Virtual Reality (VR) technology to help frontline officers better understand the impact of domestic abuse on children, young people and survivors.

With Domestic Abuse on the rise, the University of Durham reveals in their latest study that the number of domestic abuse victims contacting support services in England doubled during the first three weeks of lockdown in March/April 2020. The Police receive around 100 calls an hour relating to domestic abuse – and research revealing that at least one in four women, and one in six men will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime.

The Met Police, in their commitment to enhance officer practice at first and subsequent incidents, made the decision to pilot the training with Antser that gave officers the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of domestic abuse survivors.

Walking in the footsteps of someone experiencing domestic abuse has impacted Health, Education and Social Care Practitioners over the last two years and this insight is now being made available to front line officers due to the innovative thinking of senior officers.

Antser – the UK’s leading providers of using Virtual Reality to provide transformational solutions for the health, education, and social care sectors – delivered a pilot training programme to 48 front line officers across London’s Met Police Service to assist with its Domestic Abuse Improvement Programme.

Using Antser VR as a tool to help bring to life the perspectives of children and victims through immersive storytelling, the aim was to enhance officers’ understanding of domestic abuse and the expectations on them as first responders, while establishing the challenges they face and how they currently overcome them.

Officers were shown two immersive VR experiences – the first from the point of view of a baby in utero; the second highlighted manipulation of police officers by a perpetrator, minimising the impact of the abuse and its impact on the child – in a bid to encourage officers to think differently about their behaviour, responses and decisions when responding to domestic abuse incidents.

An ‘Outstanding’ independent fostering organisation has become one of the first in the UK to use pioneering virtual reality (VR) technology across its services, helping to train practitioners to better understand childhood experiences of trauma and exploitation.

Flourish Fostering, which specialises in providing bespoke therapeutic care to children and young people, is using Antser’s Virtual Reality (VR) technology to tackle prevalent topics, such as child sexual exploitation.

Antser VR has been implemented across the organisation to upskill Foster Parents in advanced subjects more quickly, thereby providing a realistic 360-degree perspective of the child’s world and what brings them into care. Antser is renowned for providing ground-breaking solutions to the health, education and social care sectors.

The partnership with Antser will help Flourish, recently rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, ensure it recruits and develops Foster Parents with the emotional resilience and in-depth understanding that is essential for them to develop therapeutic fostering skills and, ultimately, to maintain an attachment to their foster child during challenging times.

Antser’s VR films allow social workers and Foster Parents to walk in the footsteps of children and young people, helping them to better understand the root cause of difficult or disruptive behaviours, thereby increasing empathy and insight, allowing them to modify their responses to de-escalate and manage the situation.

These behaviours are more common in children and young people who have experienced trauma and can become more complex as young people reach adolescence, with age 12 years plus often being deemed the ‘most difficult’ to manage. Understanding the root causes of disruptive behaviours through innovative and engaging training programmes and intervention tools can prevent school and family placement disruption and teach people how to respond effectively.

Since its implementation, VR has been used in introductory training, directly with Foster Parents in their homes, and as a one-to-one tool with young people to raise awareness of issues such as grooming and county lines.

In a survey of Foster Parents and social workers, over half of respondents (60%) had never used virtual reality before. Results also revealed that after using the VR, 100% of respondents said they had a deeper understanding of the child’s perspective and that the VR had equipped them with the knowledge to make an impact in their work.

One Foster Parent who trialled the VR said: “This course was great, it really shows the child’s perspective. I feel it could also help new Foster Parents understand the things that could either help or hinder in certain situations”.

A Flourish Fostering social worker said: “The technology enables the user to step back from emotions and absorb the message, and makes it engaging to understand and remember. It’s really useful in Foster Parent training for specific issues, using different approaches for the same scenarios that deliver positive responses from children and young people on how adults dealt with challenging situations.”

Dr Mica Douglas, Managing Director of Flourish Fostering, said:

“The ability to enable Foster Parents to virtually ‘stand in the shoes’ of a traumatised child is invaluable in promoting empathy and understanding of the meaning behind the behaviour of their foster child.

“During our recent Ofsted inspection, the VR was also used by the three visiting inspectors, who were all very impressed by its capabilities.”

Antser VR is also benefiting Flourish’s existing training programme, which includes a Level 5 Diploma in Applied Therapeutic Practice. Knowledge is accelerated through the use of VR and made more meaningful for the participants, said Mica Douglas.

VR has been validated as an effective learning tool – PwC found that VR learning, compared to classroom or e-learning, is proven to deliver 4x faster learning, 4x more focused learning and 40% more confidence in applying what has been learnt.

Richard Dooner, CEO at Antser, said:

“I am excited about our partnership with Flourish Fostering and welcome their commitment to using virtual reality to enhance how they support their Foster Parents and practitioners to further support children and young people.

“Their thinking is ahead of many independent providers in how they can change lives through letting Foster Parents take a walk in the footsteps of children. Each time Flourish Fostering uses the virtual reality films, they find new ways it can and does help them achieve their goal. I’m particularly pleased to see they are embedding the virtual reality films into their level 5 diploma.”

With over 30 years’ experience, Antser provides better outcomes for children, adults, families, and communities by delivering training and practice using virtual reality within child protection and safeguarding, across children’s and adults’ sectors in the UK.

For more information about Antser VR, click here.

Earlier this year saw Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust become winners at the Patient Safety Congress Awards 2021, following its innovative work with Antser, the UKs leading provider of transformational solutions for the health, education, and social care sectors.

Rewarding projects that made use of innovative technology to ‘improve the safety of patients and alleviate pressure on the system’, Darent Valley Hospital were selected as the winners of the ‘Effective Use of Technology’ category, following a successful project with Antser to pioneer the use of Virtual Reality for their Safeguarding Training.

Run by Health Service Journal Awards, The Patient Safety Congress Poster Competition is an industry leading award that recognises safety and quality improvement initiatives nationally and globally.

Overseen by the Safeguarding Children’s Team, Darent Valley Hospital successfully implemented the innovative VR programme to help deliver effective training to ten of its staff members, including midwives.

Antser VR is one of the first VR-enabled behaviour change programmes designed for children’s and adults’ social care, as well as health and education. Using in-house designed, hard-hitting VR films as case studies, they immerse users into the lives of children and young people who have experienced abuse, offering the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the child/young individual.

Richard Dooner, Chief Executive Officer at Antser, said:

“We are so thrilled that our virtual reality partnership with the NHS Trust saw Darent Valley Hospital become winners at The Patient Safety Congress Poster Competition.

“This partnership with Darent Valley Hospital has been successful for so many reasons but mostly because staff at the hospital are now armed with the knowledge and experience to recognise certain situations, meaning the right referrals to social care can be made, at the right time.”

Following the training, over 10 staff members are now able to deliver the effective VR training programme throughout the organisation. This is mainly aimed at all clinical staff who attend Safeguarding Level 3 training which includes A&E, paediatrics, and maternity.

Darent Valley Hospital is now looking to explore how VR can be used for a stop smoking initiative and to work with other health partners to provide trauma informed training.

With over 30 years’ experience, Antser provides better outcomes for children, adults, families, and communities by delivering training and practice using virtual reality within child protection and safeguarding, across children’s and adults’ sectors in the UK.

For more information about Antser VR, click here.

Antser, the UK’s leading provider of transformational solutions for the health, education, and social care sectors, has partnered with London Borough of Hillingdon to train staff to better understand social care topics including dementia, autism, and young people with experiences of trauma.

Originally undertaking the project to work with Antser in late 2019, due to COVID-19, the implementation of the VR services within their training in adult and children’s social care sector only commenced the following year.

In their commitment to enhance understanding and awareness of behaviours they deal with on a daily basis; London Borough of Hillingdon made the decision to work with Antser after Sandra Taylor, Director of Provider Services and Commissioned Care, first came across the innovation solutions.

Using Antser VR to deliver the pilot group session, the aim was to help provide innovative training to the team at London Borough of Hillingdon. The VR tool was used to bring to life perspectives of individuals living with dementia, autism and young people who have experienced trauma, through immersive storytelling, reminding practitioners and social workers to keep the child at the heart of their practice.

Following the group training, nearly all the respondents (86%) said the VR experience gave them further insight and, in turn, would consider altering their way of approach. In addition, results showed that over a half (77%) of new users now have a deeper understanding of the children’s perspective.

Caron Blower, Senior Reablement Carer, who attended a training session in July, said:

“The training reminded me to always be mindful of what a person with autism or dementia is experiencing and be more empathetic towards individuals with these conditions.”

Another respondent said:

“This is fantastic training for anyone supporting young people, adults or older people within social care. It’s a far more realistic way of learning and provides a great insight into the issues these individuals experience.”

After a positive reaction to the use of virtual reality, the council has additionally offered the training to several of their voluntary partners, including Hillingdon Mind, Carers Trust, Alzheimer’s Society and Disablement Association Hillingdon (DASH).

Richard Dooner, Chief Executive Officer of Antser, said:

“We are so pleased to have had the opportunity to work with London Borough of Hillingdon to trial their use of our innovative virtual reality technology within their social care services.

“The results from this partnership have further demonstrated the hard work we strive to achieve here at Antser, and we are looking forward to continuing working with the council to help deliver better outcomes for vulnerable individuals within our society.”

With over 30 years’ experience, Antser provides better outcomes for children, adults, families, and communities by delivering training and practice within child protection and safeguarding, across children’s and adults’ sectors in the UK.

Since its inception, Antser VR now helps organisations across both the public and private sector target several topical issues currently affecting vulnerable children, young people and adults, including child sexual exploitation (CSE), domestic violence, gangs and knife crime and youth justice.

For more information about Antser VR, visit: http://18.168.228.101/antser-virtual-reality/
