LGBTQIA+ Awareness

This highly specialised course supports participants in developing a better understanding of the language they use and consider and whether this promotes the rights of people who identify as LGBTQIA+.

Learning outcomes

 

  • To understand what the term LGBTQ+ means and breakdown the abbreviated term
  • To look at legislation in relation to LGBTQ+ and the duties that this places on us as social care workers
  • Explore how can we support those we work with to express their sexuality and actively establish relationships
  • Look at capacity and how this affects relationships
  • Discuss biphobia, homophobia and transphobia
  • Identify how we reduce risk of bullying and harassment
  • Recognise mental health issues that can arise as a result of LGBTQ+ issues
  • Explore how sexuality and identity should be considered during assessment and support planning given the impact of discrimination and prejudice at a time when they may not have been open about their sexuality

Description

This course aims at developing the participant’s knowledge and awareness of LGBTQIA+. By attending this course participants will look at the language they use and consider whether this promotes the rights of people who identify as LGBTQIA+.

Throughout this course we will explore how they can support those they work with to express their sexuality and actively establish relationships as well as recognising mental health issues that can arise as a result of LGBTQIA+ issues. In addition to this, we will emphasize on understanding the legislation in relation to LGBTQIA+ and the duties that this places on us as social care workers. This course is ideal for mixed groups of adult and children’s practitioners as well as partner agencies.

This course is delivered by our expert facilitators who will bring their first hand experience and tailor the course to suit your learning needs.
