Learning outcomes

  • Understand how to apply the principles of the Act to support decision making and promote autonomy;
  • Understand the ways that a person with capacity can plan for future care or treatment;
  • Understand how and when to assess capacity and the importance of good recording;
  • Understand the role of a Decision Maker, how to make a Best Interests decision and when a decision must be taken to the Court of Protection;
  • Understand the role of an IMCA, when to appoint an IMCA and their role in decision making.

This course will provide practitioners with a working knowledge and understanding of how to apply the key features of the Mental Capacity Act in their practice and make best interest decisions.
