This highly specialised course support participants to understand what dementia is, how it impacts on the person and those around them and how they can impact positively when providing direct support, assessing needs, and developing plans

Learning outcomes

 

    • Understand what dementia is, including the most common types of dementia, signs and symptoms, potential causes, risk factors and how dementia is diagnosed
    • Understand the differences/similarities between dementia and delirium
    • Increase your empathy by exploring what it might feel like to have dementia
    • Understand the impact of dementia on carers, family and friends and the types of support available
    • Know about the Herbert protocol and how to use this in practice
    • Know which legislation underpins the provision of support to people with dementia, and how
    • Learn key skills to support the completion and review of assessments and Care and Support/Care Plans
    • Learn how to complete a one-page profile and the benefit of using them
    • Understand the importance of a person-centered approach and how to apply this in practice when providing care and support
    • Explore strategies for engaging with people who find it difficult to accept support
    • Understand how to support behaviour and emotional difficulties, including the impact of the environment
    • Have an awareness of how to support someone with a learning disability who has dementia
    • Have an awareness of how to support a person with dementia through the safeguarding process
    • Have an awareness of NHS Continuing Healthcare and be able to identify when a person with dementia may be eligible for an assessment

This course will support participants to understand what dementia is, how it impacts on the person and those around them and how they can impact positively when providing direct support, assessing needs, and developing plans.
